Free website check: speed, security, Google and Law 25
Type your site’s address. You will know whether it is fast on a phone and a computer, when your domain expires, whether WordPress is up to date, whether Google can find you, and what Law 25 and French require. Then the questions to ask your agency.
What the check looks at
- Speed on a phone and a computer
- Domain name and expiry
- Security and updates
- Google and Google Maps
- E-mail: spam or not
- Law 25
- French version
- Upkeep and contact
We read what is public, once: your domain’s official registry, your home page, robots.txt and the sitemap. Each finding is compared with our studies of Québec small-business sites.
How the check works
- The domain name: the extension’s official registry (.ca, .com, .quebec…), the one registrars use. It gives the registrar and the expiry date, not the holder’s name.
- WordPress: the version the page shows, graded with WordPress.org’s official list (latest, older but patched, or insecure).
- Google: “noindex” instructions, robots.txt, the sitemap, the home page title and description, and the business details Google can read (address, phone, hours).
- E-mail: the domain’s public SPF, DMARC and DKIM settings. Since 2024, Gmail requires SPF or DKIM from every sender, and DMARC from those sending over 5,000 a day.
- Speed: measured with Google’s tool (PageSpeed Insights) on a simulated phone and computer, and shown here. Only the home page address is sent to Google.
- Comparisons come from our studies: 189 small-business sites for Law 25, 187 for maintenance.
Limits: only the home page, seen from outside, at one moment. It is neither a security audit nor legal advice.
Frequently asked questions
Is the check really free?
Yes, with no account and no e-mail. It is limited to 10 checks an hour from one connection, to prevent abuse.
What do you do with my site’s address?
Nothing. We read what is public once (the domain registry, its public e-mail settings, the home page, robots.txt and the sitemap) and we do not keep the address. To measure the speed, the home page address is sent to Google, which visits it like any visitor. Only an anonymous usage counter is kept.
Why no score out of 100?
Because a score mixes things of different weight: a domain expiring in 10 days is urgent, a missing description is not. So each point is sorted: to fix, to check, or in order.
My site is on Wix, Shopify or Squarespace: is the check useful?
Yes. The platform updates its software, but the domain name, Google visibility, Law 25 and French still need watching.
Can I check an agency’s site before choosing it?
Yes. An agency’s site is its shop window: if it shows an insecure version or a 2022 footer, ask about it. The result is shown only to you.
Is “to check” serious?
Not necessarily: the check only sees the home page, from outside. “To check” means you should ask whoever manages your site. It is not legal advice.
How is the speed measured?
With Google’s measuring tool (PageSpeed Insights), on a simulated phone and computer, and the result shows here, without leaving the page. A measure varies a little from one time to the next: run it again if the result surprises you. When Google has enough visits, you also see the speed for your real visitors.
